Detection and Quantification of Potential Bioactive Compounds in the Acetone Extract of Citrullus lanatus (Melon) Seed Using GC-MS and FTIR 4 Spectrometer

Abstract
The characterisation of acetone extract of Citrullus lanatus (seed) was carried out using a Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer. From the GC-MS result, sixteen compounds were identified which include 3-(cyclopropylamino) propinitrile (0.23%), 3,5-(1,1-dimethylethy) phenol (0.46%), undecanoic acid (0.69%), methyl, tetradecanoate (1.86%), methyl, 11-octadecenoate (1.39%), methyl, 14methyl, pentadecanoate (9.76%), methyl, 9-octadecenoate (12.82%), methyl, octadecanoate (11.42%), 7-hexadecenoic acid (14.68%), octadecanoic acid (13.51%), methyl, 9,15-octadecadienoate (6.06%), 3 11-tetradecadien-1-ol (3.96%), 6,9-pentadecadien-1-ol (3.72%), 2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyl, tetracosahexane (4.42%), hexadecanoic acid (7.92%), and methyl, 9,12-octadecadienoate (6,99%). The FTIR spectrometer result revealed the presence of the following compounds, carbonyl compounds, nitro compounds, esters, carboxylic acids and alcohol. These compounds may be responsible for the medicinal properties exhibited by the plant.
